South Indian Tomato Chutney Recipe

    Enjoy your food more when you use tomatoes as a base. Tomato chutney can be an accompaniment to many dishes ranging from pasta and risotto, to paneer and desserts. It’s a versatile way to have fun with food and allow yourself to be spontaneous in the kitchen.

    Ingredients

    • Tomatoes – 450 gms – diced
    • Onions – 2 medium sized – diced
    • Garlic Pods – whole – 8
    • Peanuts – 50 gms
    • Curry leaves – 4 sprigs
    • Kashmiri red chillies – 5 nos
    • Green chillies – 3 nos
    • Chilly powder – 1 Tbsp
    • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
    • Channa dal – 40 gms
    • Jaggery – 1 Gooseberry size or 1 Tbsp
    • Oil 4 Tbsp
    • Hing / Asafoetida – 1/2 tsp
    • Tamarind – Marble sized

    Preparation

    1. Heat the pan and adjust to Medium flame
    2. Add OIL
    3. Add PEANUTS
    4. Add CHANNA DAL
    5. Now add the whole GARLIC pods followed by KASHMIRI CHILLIES
    6. Add ONIONS
    7. Add GREEN CHILLIES
    8. Add CURRY LEAVES
    9. Now its time for TOMATOES
    10. Saute well
    11. Add TAMARIND
    12. Add SALT
    13. Add CHILLY POWDER
    14. Add HING and mix well
    15. Add JAGGERY
    16. Mix and allow it to cool down.
    17. Once cool, transfer to a mixie jar
    18. Blend it into a fine paste
    19. The tomato chutney is done and ready to be served with idli or dosa or uttapam or snacks like masala vada, dal vada.
